Domain Names and Web Hosting
At Netsprouts, we use GoDaddy for domain names and web hosting. They are the biggest and cheapest company, with mediocre tech support. We prefer to handle domains and hosting for our clients (to add an extra layer of support), but if you insist on buying it yourself, the top two ads on the right will give you a 20% discount.
Domain Name
The name of your website (i.e. www.netsprouts.net, www.facebook.com). Domain names must be purchased through a domain registration company.
Web Hosting / Web Servers
The "public-facing" computer (web server) where your website is saved. These special computers have ultra fast internet connections that can serve a website to millions of visitors simultaneously. Web hosting companies own these computers (which are locked in specially air conditioned rooms), and you can rent some space from them.
Types of Web Servers
There are two types of web servers that run different software: Windows or Linux. It is best to ask your web developer which server technology your website requires.
Which Web Server Should I Use?
Windows Server
- Your website is built in ASP.NET
- Your files end in .aspx or .asp
- Your website uses a SQL Server Database

Linux Server
- Your website is built in PHP
- Your files end in .php
- Your website uses a MySQL Database
- You are using Drupal or osCommerce

Notes: Windows servers can run PHP/MySQL but the opposite is not true. WordPress, Joomla, Flash, and HTML websites will run on either server.
Problems Running a Web Server
It may sound easy to run your own web server, but any problems that arise are exceedingly difficult to solve. The tutorials are very technical, and worst of all, changes to your nameservers take up to 2 days to take effect. If you needed to change it 3 times to get it right, your website would have been down for 6 days.
